FROM STRAßENSCAN TO CONNECTRON

untitled-1

From Straßenscan to Connectron in its broader sense is in exploration of the human relationship with figural - markings like the pictorgram and the pictoral symbols of written communication, or the isolatable structures in a painting - and their interpretation by musicians. ‘A Walk Which Brings Calm’ or ‘a famished walk to the river with a paper cup of filter coffee.’ is the first work featured in the project. Developed from a journey taken from the Jerwood Space in Southwalk, S.E. London, to the river Thames. The journey was made on foot and with no particular route planned other than the general heading of the river. The work was created as part of a research collaboration commissioned by the Jerwood Space as part of a collaboration in development of understanding towards the dynamics and protocol required by their plans to implement a project space at the centre.

Allowing myself to drift and be attracted or repelled by the various environments en route using a combination of different techniques with the composition of a manuscript in mind. The manuscript then is a reduction of urban space into a series of marks and references somewhere between photogrammy, observational writing and the mapping of consciousness and visual relation to space.

The collaborations here are central to the creative process - if only firstly because the primary products are music and the manuscript, but also because the interpretation of these materials by different musicians are integral to the developmental process. Collaborations deal with the development of a series of studies, which lead up to a replaying of the whole piece and different sections. The studies and conversations inform the manipulating of the manuscript in order to make steps towards the most universally interpretable form - one which results in similar renditions of the nature of the space of the journey.

Progression can only be found within the natural interpretation by musicians, though there is bound to be some variation. Can I ask what instrument you play and if you might tell me a little about your history and direction as a musician ?
